We are delighted to share with all, the long awaited passage of the National Health Professions Bill in both the houses of Parliament of India on 28th March 2021. The profession of Optometry is now regulated like all other medical professions and will go a long way in providing professional vision care.
Historically the Opticianry, commonly known as Opticals was a traditionally managed trade (recorded history since early 13th century), mostly run by technicians who learnt this art, from the earlier generations of practitioners. Gradually, with the advent of modern technology and scientific education in last couple of centuries, a medical discipline, dedicated completely to measurement of eye parameters has emerged.
Professionals trained in this medical field are called Optometrists.
The Optometry deals with measurements of eye parameters like sight, balance & various abnormalities in the visual system and management of the same. Any pathological complications if detected, are referred to the Ophthalmologists (Eye specialists), who then handle the medical & surgical management of various eye diseases.
The Optometry as a medical discipline has gradually gained traction since soon after independence especially during the last 3 decades the awareness regarding professional eye care has increased dramatically in India.
